😱 Your Child Avoids Reading? Act Now

Issue # 1

Readers in the Making

Hi there, Readers in the Making Family!

Have you ever wondered if your child might be struggling with reading but didn’t know what signs to look for?

This week, I’m sharing five subtle signals that can help you identify reading challenges early—and simple ways to support your child in building confidence and joy in reading. Plus, we’re diving into some winter book recommendations that will warm your heart this season!

Turning Pages Together

I remember when I first noticed a student struggling with reading. He always seemed to “forget” his book or needed to take frequent breaks during reading time. At first, I didn’t think much of it—but then I realized it was his way of avoiding something that felt overwhelming.

My own son did this too.

Frequent trips to the bathroom. Lots of chewing on his shirt. Constant need to get up and change locations. Lots of anxiety around reading time.

By pairing my student and my son Jackson with engaging, accessible books and making reading time low-pressure and fun, I watched their confidence grow. It reminded me how important it is to look beyond the surface and offer support when kids need it most.

Have you ever noticed these subtle signs in your own child? You’re not alone, and there’s always a way forward.

The Reading Spark

5 Subtle Signs Your Child Might Be Struggling with Reading

Avoids Choosing Books:

They hesitate or delay picking a book, often feeling unsure or uninterested.

Doesn’t Want to Read

They express frustration or find excuses to avoid reading time.\

Frequent Bathroom Breaks

Suddenly needing the restroom or finding distractions during reading.

Skips Words

They skip over difficult words or guess without trying to decode them.

Reads Without Comprehension

They can say the words but struggle to explain what they’ve read.

If you notice these signs, focus on building confidence and making reading enjoyable. For example:

  • Pair them with books that match their interests and skill level.
  • Create a relaxed, cozy reading environment where they feel safe to try.
  • Celebrate small wins.

Issue # 45 Readers in the Making Hi there, Readers in the Making Family! Ever tried to read a book with a child who just can’t sit still? One minute, they’re flipping pages, the next, they’re upside down on the couch. (And somehow, the book is now across the room. 🤦♀️ This is so my son, Jackson! Still! And he is 20!) Here’s the thing—movement and reading don’t have to be enemies! Letting kids move while they read can actually improve focus, comprehension, and engagement. This week, I’m...

Issue # 45 Readers in the Making Hi there, Readers in the Making Family! Has your child ever sighed dramatically at the mere mention of reading time? But here’s the thing—sometimes, the way we approach reading (even with the best intentions!) can actually push kids away instead of pulling them in. (Don't worry if you...
