Turning Pages Together

A mom recently reached out to me with the sweetest message. She told me that, before, her child had zero interest in reading. Every time she brought out a book, it turned into a struggle.

Then, she discovered Piggie and Elephant books by Mo Willems. Suddenly, her child was laughing, pointing at words, and begging to read together. It was the first time reading felt fun—and she was so thankful for the introduction to those books.

That’s the magic of finding the right book at the right time. It’s not about forcing kids into grade-level texts or pushing them through reading drills—it’s about helping them discover books that light them up inside.

The Reading Spark

📚 Finding the Balance Between Reading Work & Reading Joy

So many kids say, “I hate reading.” But here’s the thing—it’s not reading they hate. It’s the pressure, the drills, and the feeling that they’re never good enough.

Want to shift that mindset? Try this:

1️⃣ Divide Reading Time into Two Parts
✔️ 10 minutes of “reading work” – Decoding, fluency practice, or comprehension strategies.
✔️ 20+ minutes of “reading joy” – Books they choose, no questions, no pressure—just enjoyment.

2️⃣ Let Them “Read Up” and “Read Down”
✔️ Encourage books at their level for skill-building.
✔️ But ALSO let them read books below their level for confidence and fun—and above their level to stretch their curiosity!

The more we balance practice with joy, the more our kids will choose to read on their own.

Issue # 45 Readers in the Making Hi there, Readers in the Making Family! Ever tried to read a book with a child who just can’t sit still? One minute, they’re flipping pages, the next, they’re upside down on the couch. (And somehow, the book is now across the room. 🤦♀️ This is so my son, Jackson! Still! And he is 20!) Here’s the thing—movement and reading don’t have to be enemies! Letting kids move while they read can actually improve focus, comprehension, and engagement. This week, I’m...

Issue # 45 Readers in the Making Hi there, Readers in the Making Family! Has your child ever sighed dramatically at the mere mention of reading time? Maybe they drag their feet when it’s time to pick up a book or say the dreaded words: "I hate reading." It’s frustrating, right? Especially when we know how important reading is. But here’s the thing—sometimes, the way we approach reading (even with the best intentions!) can actually push kids away instead of pulling them in. (Don't worry if you...

Issue # 1 Readers in the Making Hi there, Readers in the Making Family! Have you ever watched a child’s imagination take off after reading a great story?
