Readers in the Making

Hi there, Readers in the Making Family!

Happy New Year! I’m so excited to kick off 2025 with you as we dive into joyful ways to inspire your child to love reading. This week, I’m sharing tips to turn those “I hate homework and reading” moments into opportunities for connection—and a special 31-day challenge that’s all about the love of reading!

Turning Pages Together

When my daughter was in fifth grade, she declared, “I hate reading!” My heart sank. As someone who loves books, I wasn’t sure how to respond without pushing her further away. Instead of lecturing, I asked, “What makes it hard for you?” That simple question opened a door to understanding her feelings—and together, we found ways to make reading fun again. That moment reminded me how important it is to approach challenges with compassion and curiosity.

What about you? Have you had a similar moment with your child? You’re not alone—and we’re in this together.

It’s okay to feel frustrated. Let’s take it one step at a time.

What if we make it fun? Want to try reading in silly voices?

I believe in you. Let’s figure this out together.

How about you choose the book? We can read just one page.

Issue # 45 Readers in the Making Hi there, Readers in the Making Family! Ever tried to read a book with a child who just can’t sit still? One minute, they’re flipping pages, the next, they’re upside down on the couch. (And somehow, the book is now across the room. 🤦♀️ This is so my son, Jackson! Still! And he is 20!) Here’s the thing—movement and reading don’t have to be enemies! Letting kids move while they read can actually improve focus, comprehension, and engagement. This week, I’m...

Issue # 45 Readers in the Making Hi there, Readers in the Making Family! Has your child ever sighed dramatically at the mere mention of reading time? Maybe they drag their feet when it’s time to pick up a book or say the dreaded words: "I hate reading." It’s frustrating, right? Especially when we know how important reading is. But here’s the thing—sometimes, the way we approach reading (even with the best intentions!) can actually push kids away instead of pulling them in. (Don't worry if you...

Issue # 1 Readers in the Making Hi there, Readers in the Making Family! Have you ever watched a child’s imagination take off after reading a great story? Maybe they pretended to be Cinderella at the ball, built a wolf-proof house like the Three Little Pigs, or brainstormed how to really help the Gingerbread Man cross the river safely.
